Coverage Overview and Plan Options

Pet insurance and health plans help pet parents say yes to recommended care by providing financial protection for unexpected medical needs and support for routine services. Below is a complete overview of available plans, what they cover, and how the process works.

Available Plan Types

We offer four plan options:

1. Illness & Accident

Available through Hartville.

What it covers:

  • Accidents

  • Illnesses

  • Diagnostics

  • Treatments and therapies

This plan provides comprehensive coverage for unexpected medical issues related to both injuries and sickness.

2. Extensive Care

Available through ASPCA + Mint Wellness.

What it covers:

  • All Illness & Accident benefits

  • Preventive and wellness care for preventive services

This plan includes full accident and illness protection plus routine preventive services.

3. Wellness Only

Available through Mint Wellness.

What it covers:

  • Routine services only

This plan does not cover accidents or illnesses. It is designed specifically for ongoing preventive care.

4. Accident Only

Available through Odie.

What it covers:

  • Accidents only

This plan does not include illness coverage or routine preventive services.

Coverage Details

Accidents and Illnesses

  • Illness & Accident and Extensive Care plans cover both accidents and illnesses.

  • Accident Only covers accidents but does not cover illnesses.

  • Wellness Only does not cover accidents or illnesses.

Routine and Preventive Services

Preventive care may include services such as annual exams, vaccinations, and routine lab work.

  • Wellness Only and Extensive Care include:

    • One annual exam

    • Two vaccinations

    • One bloodwork panel

    • Either a urinalysis or fecal test

    • Coverage up to $350 total per year

  • Illness & Accident and Accident Only do not include preventive services unless a wellness add-on is purchased.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Pre-existing conditions are not covered.

However, under Illness & Accident and Extensive Care, a curable condition may be eligible for coverage if it has been free of symptoms and treatment for at least 180 days.

Please note:

  • Knee and ligament conditions that occurred before coverage began or during the waiting period are not eligible for coverage.

Waiting Periods

  • Illness & Accident and Extensive Care have a 14-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

  • Accident Only typically has a shorter waiting period for accidents and does not include illness coverage.

  • Wellness benefits under Wellness Only and Extensive Care begin immediately.

Common Coverage Questions

If a pet swallows a toy and needs surgery, is it covered?

Surgery for swallowing a foreign object is covered under:

  • Illness & Accident

  • Extensive Care

  • Accident Only

It is not covered under Wellness Only.

If a pet eats chocolate, is treatment covered?

Treatment for accidental poisoning, such as chocolate ingestion, is covered under:

  • Illness & Accident

  • Extensive Care

  • Accident Only

It is not covered under Wellness Only.

Choosing the Right Plan

  • Choose Illness & Accident for broad protection against unexpected medical issues.

  • Choose Extensive Care for full protection plus preventive services.

  • Choose Wellness Only if you are looking strictly for routine care coverage.

  • Choose Accident Only for budget-friendly protection against injuries only.

Exclusions

The following are generally not covered:

  • Pre-existing conditions

  • Elective or cosmetic procedures

  • Breeding-related expenses

  • Similar non-medical services

Claims

Claims are submitted directly to the insurance carrier or wellness provider. Reimbursement is paid directly to the pet parent.
